Find the Meaning of an Emoji
Emoji started in Japan so many of the icons are closely tied to the Japanese culture. If you want to know what an emoji is you can look it up here!

Emoji Without an iPhone
The create button above actually makes an image you of your message that you can save to your computer and share it. If you want to know what an emoji is there is a really good explenation by iEmoji.com coming soon! If you only know the character's decimal or hex notation of the emoji and want to know the meaning try typing "emoji e507" or "iemoji 58157" in google. Google will usually show the emoji name quickly.

You can now enable emoji by adding the keyboard under settings. Although, there are some PAID apps that will allow you to unlock more.
iOS 6 (current version)
All emoji is available under keyboards! No apps necessary! Enable the emoji keyboard and you get thewhole wide variety!

The actual character the iPhone generates changed for many emojis in iOS5. You can still create older iPhone emoji by clicking the old emoji checkbox and clicking on a face.
