Mom sent me an e-mail: 's website about volunteer opportunities. I had asked her to keep me posted on any volunteer organizations that I could possibly enter. I flagged it immediately. The website is this: http://www..org/  I clicked the link and got drawn in immediately. Their goal was to tutor adopted Chinese children and educate them in Chinese culture. I was so glad to see something like that. I read over a lot of the stuff, found out a lot of the information, and I liked what I saw.  There’s this event every month, designed by , and it’s like a tea party or something. I think it’s on Saturday afternoon and evenings. I kept on thinking as I read through the site, I want to be a part of this, I really want to be a part of this. And it’s not because of the volunteer hours. If it were just for that, I would have given up the notion immediately. But I loved this idea!  I’m commonly frustrated when I see that my classmates, like , or , and , don’t like speaking Chinese. I suddenly remembered the reason why I studied Chinese so intensively during my years in the church: I thought, if I could be just a little different from the others, maybe something magical could happen to me.  Yes, I thought that. Who understands the workings of a 9-year old brain anyway? So I found this site, and I found the people here working to spread the Chinese culture, and I thought, all this time I’ve been thinking, if only I could get others to become like me. If only I could somehow bridge this huge gap between China and America.  I read something recently, about some Korean singer who got slammed hard because he said something detrimental about Koreans. There was an article, with the term ‘twinkies’. Twinkies are people who are asian-american, and are confused about their identity. Eventually, they have to swing in one direction or another, choosing one side. Most choose American.  Maybe I chose American, but I feel like I always wanted to find the perfect medium between Chinese and American. Both are good. Both can teach you so many things. I don’t want to shut my eyes to any side just because I have to choose a side. So I was thinking:  If only we didn’t have to choose a side.  And that’s off on a tangent, I’m sorry. What I’m getting at is: I did know such a thing existed, but until I saw the website and began to get so much information about it, I never once thought it was possible.  But it’s right here! I remember she used to be like my big sister. I can’t see her as a friend. Maybe I don’t need to. I looked on the other staff members, and I could recognize and a from Chinese school. I know, I know-by-face. And 's brother, , is also on the staff.  I wonder if she dragged him into it. Well, he is one of the only two boys in the staff. This organization is mostly girls, and I looked at their biographies and I tried to measure up against them.  I also sent this to mom:  PS (I didn't include this part in the letter, of course) I actually sent it. I'm sorry, my hand hit the Send button before i could stop it. I looked on the website a lot, and I really liked what I saw. The times are Sunday afternoons, from 3:30 to 5:30. The place is only 12 minutes from here, which is extremely convenient. I know some of the staff, including , , and (the from chinese school) I was not friends with them before, but I think I can get along with them. What do you think? One of my major concerns is that this organization is a more 'friend' related thing. Which means that I need to be one of their friends in order to be accepted. Remember when I was telling you about, when I needed to get into a club, I had to know an inside person? Remember my example with XXXXX? I'm afraid that they might not recognize my name, and thus I'll be more of an outsider. This will make it harder to fit in.  I'm sorry, I'm ranting. I'm just a little nervous.    And I seriously was nervous. I kept on hearing this doom, doom, doom sound in my ears. This thing could honestly change my life. I’m always hearing about these people saying “I joined so and so, and it changed my life forever.”  I’m already feeling so much more motivated. I get really excited thinking about it, not to mention the heebie-jeebies crawling in my stomach…  Unpleasant thought. Shove it away.  And of course I hear these people saying ‘I was so excited I couldn’t sleep!’ But of course I’ll sleep. I’m pretty good at sleeping when I want to. I think it’s inherited from dad.
