There is an inherent tendency in many of us to sub-consciously trace forms, surfaces and textures around us- running a finger along the edge of a table or a right-angle worn into a rounded corner, scoring the pleats of a dress, combing the tassels of a rug, aiming for symmetrical balance in distributing our walking steps on a tiled floor. Contact with each surface/ object seeks an arrangement, a perception of pattern, a sense of rhythm. We tune ourselves over time, sensitize ourselves to a certain pitch and create our own anchors for language, thought and articulation.

Art serves as a lens, it aids vision that is not merely optical but cognitive as well; at times even altering and β€˜correcting’ it. It is both a contested space of truth and a space of contested truths. I often think about how an artist negotiates with this space, grappling with confrontation and conflict, to deliberate on fleeting moments of clarity in defining an identity. An idea, oscillating between conviction and doubt, only finds deeper engagement in dialogue and human interaction. We talk, text, type, hear, retell, rewrite, reread, analyze, gossip, enact, touch, hug, remember, invoke and evoke. We add a little bit of ourselves in piece-meals offered on elaborate platters. Histories are built and memories are constructed into seamless narratives- the human mind is at its innovative best while telling a story. And the stories are retold many times over with imperceptible shifts in each narration, changing its course like a river. It is difficult to paint the same shade of grey a second time, but the alien patch can be coveredwith a shadow of what already exists. We spend years honing our skills and refining our abilities in manipulation- and aesthetics is a powerful device to present an alternate take on anything ranging from a still-life painting to a political campaign. A playful manipulation of images and words lead to the recurring questions that I am preoccupied with. The attempt to extract definitive forms from fluid thoughts is nothing short of fishing, and every tug of the line fills us with hope.

There is a longing for change, but there is also the pursuit of continuity. Even ruptures are often rationalized with reason; patterns are cited and histories reignited.

My restless attempt at a resistance to repetition is like a catalyst Β for renewing existing structures, even our own beliefs. Sometimes I manage a victory, the kind that becomes a monument of memory, in celebration and in jest . The noise of revelry grows into its own echoes, booming down corridors of its own institutions. The magic of the new gets more elusive in the web of echoes until I can no longer find what I have already caught.

Questions grow more and more comforting, to rest on. Through art, we create favourable resting places, each with customised ambience, unique embellishments and peculiar aesthetics that are all tied up by insignificant everyday observations...
